Parents

  Dear Parents,

The Together for Humanity Foundation is an interfaith, non-profit organisation committed to fostering harmony between different segments of Australian society.  We do not promote any particular religion but advocate the acceptance of people of all faiths, and no faith at all, and the importance of co-operating on our shared values.

The Foundation has two inter-related goals: to reduce prejudice in our society and to encourage children to engage in behaviours that have positive outcomes such as kindness, caring and respect.

Our programmes are designed to assist children to think critically about the perceptions they have of people of different faiths and enthnic backgrounds: perceptions formed from comments they have heard or behaviours they have observed, either directly or in the media.

It is widely recognised that many aspects of a child's education are enhanced by a strong bond between educators and parents.  This is particularly true of our programmes.  You can add to the effectiveness of our work by partnering with us and encouraging critical thinking at home.  For instance, if a comment is made about the poor behaviour of a particular person or group of people, you might like to discuss the following questions with your child:

  1. What are we not being told by the media, or by the person relaying the story?
  2. Are there other people from the same religious or racial group behaving well, even admirably?
  3. Do the people who are currently misbehaving, misbehave all of the time?  Are there other things about them that are good?
  4. Can we be careful for our own safety and still assume the best about others most of the time?

You might also like to download our Action Together award and encourage your child to participate.  By completing 40 actions as part of an interfaith, intercultural team, your child will extend goodness and kindness, and serve as a role model to others.

I am confident that in partnership, parents and educators can reduce prejudice in Australia, and cultivate a more harmonious society.  I hope you'll join with us in challenging your child to see beyond stereotypes and encouraging actions that foster qualities such as caring, kindness and respect.  If you would like us to visit your child's school, please download a booking form and discuss our programmes with your child's teacher.

Yours sincerely,

Zalman Kastel
